- Freezer
- 9 months (raw whole pieces)
Shelf life
How long does chicken breast last?
Concrete numbers by storage condition. Use the longest viable option you have time for.
| Condition | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Counter, room temperature | Under 2 hours | Do not leave raw or cooked chicken out longer than 2 hours. |
| Fridge, raw | 1-2 days | Coldest part of the fridge, on a plate to catch any drips. |
| Fridge, cooked | 3-4 days | Refrigerate within 2 hours of cooking. |
| Freezer, raw whole pieces | 9 months for best quality | Safe indefinitely if kept at 0°F, but quality declines. |

Storage
How to store chicken breasts for maximum freshness.
- 1
Store raw chicken on the bottom shelf of the fridge to prevent any drips from contaminating other foods. Keep it in a sealed bag or container on a plate.
- 2
Use raw chicken within two days of purchase. If you cannot, freeze it within the first 24 hours for best quality on thaw.
- 3
Thaw frozen chicken in the fridge (overnight), in cold water (change every 30 minutes), or in the microwave. Never thaw on the counter, where the outer layer enters the bacterial growth zone.
- 4
Cool cooked chicken to room temperature within an hour before refrigerating. Store in shallow containers so it cools through evenly.
- 5
Use separate cutting boards or wash thoroughly between raw chicken and any other food, especially produce that will not be cooked.
