How long do strawberries last? And how to stop them from molding overnight.
Strawberries are highly perishable. Keeping them cold, dry, and protected from bruising gives them the best chance of lasting through the week.
Food-safety guidance assumes proper handling, a refrigerator at 40°F or below, and a freezer at 0°F. Harmful bacteria cannot always be seen, smelled, or tasted; follow recalls and discard food that was stored outside safe time or temperature limits.

Shelf life
How long does strawberry last?
Concrete numbers by storage condition. Use the longest viable option you have time for.
| Condition | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Counter, room temperature | 1-2 days | Eat or refrigerate quickly. Counter storage invites mold. |
| Fridge, unwashed in original container | 3-5 days | Cull any moldy berries daily. |
| Freezer, washed, dried, single layer then bagged | 6-8 months | Use directly in smoothies or thaw for compote. |
Storage
How to store strawberries for maximum freshness.
- 1
Keep strawberries dry until you are ready to eat them. Before eating, rinse them gently under plain running water and dry with a clean cloth or paper towel; FDA does not recommend soap or produce wash.
- 2
Store berries in a single layer when practical, in a clean container that does not trap condensation. Stacking creates pressure points where bruising and mold begin.
- 3
Inspect daily and remove any berry that shows mold, soft spots, or weeping liquid. Mold spreads to neighboring berries within hours.
- 4
To freeze, hull the berries, slice or leave whole, freeze in a single layer on a tray, then transfer to a bag once solid. This prevents them from clumping.
